Restitution is giving back what was taken, lost, damaged or stolen to the owner. It is a Christian principle deeply rooted in the righteousness and justice of God. Restitution is more than just making amends for wrongs committed; it also includes seeking reconciliation with those who have been hurt by one’s action or inaction.
In Luke 19:8, we see Zacchaeus, a tax collector, who encountered Jesus and afterward declared, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.” Zacchaeus recognised his wrongdoing and was willing to make restitution to those he had wronged. In Exodus 22:1, we read about restitution in the Old Testament law: “If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.” This passage emphasizes the importance of restoring what was taken from others and making things right in the sight of God.
True repentance tance involves turning away from sin and making amends for the wrongs we have committed (Acts 3:19). In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus taught us the importance of reconciling with others before offering our gifts at the altar. It says, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, you need to leave your gift there in front of the altar, first go and be reconciled to them and then come and offer your gift so that your repentance can be complete, showing your sincerity of heart and purpose.
Also, very importantly, restitution enables us to walk in righteousness and integrity. It shows that we are committed to living according to God’s standard.
